THE SCIENCE OF HEARING

Understanding Audiology

Audiology, derived from the Latin word audīre meaning "to hear," is the branch of science focused on hearing, balance, and related disorders such as tinnitus. Audiological assessments help determine if hearing is within the normal range and, if not, identify which frequencies (high, middle, or low) are affected and to what extent.

Our audiology team works closely with ENT specialists to provide personalized and effective care, ensuring a seamless journey from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation.

Conditions We Treat

We evaluate and manage all types and degrees of hearing impairment across all age groups.

Hearing Loss (All Types & Degrees)

We evaluate and manage all types and degrees of hearing impairment:

  • • Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Damage to inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve — managed with hearing aids or cochlear implants
  • • Conductive Hearing Loss: Obstruction or damage in outer/middle ear — treatable with medication or surgery
  • • Mixed Hearing Loss: A combination of both types
  • • Age-Related Hearing Loss (Presbycusis): Progressive decline with advancing age
  • • Sudden Hearing Loss: A medical emergency requiring prompt evaluation and treatment
  • • Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: From prolonged exposure to loud sounds
  • • Hearing Loss in Children: Congenital, infection-related, or speech-delay-associated
Sensorineural Conductive Sudden SSNHL

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound (ringing, buzzing, hissing) without an external source. We offer comprehensive evaluation and management strategies, including:

  • • Identifying and treating underlying causes
  • • Tinnitus retraining therapy
  • • Sound therapy
  • • Hearing aid fitting (for tinnitus masking)
  • • Counseling and coping strategies

Ear Infections and Discharge

We assess and treat hearing issues arising from infections, perforations, or fluid buildup in the ear.

Balance and Vertigo Disorders

Audiology evaluation is integral to diagnosing vestibular (balance) disorders, which often present with dizziness or unsteadiness.

Advanced Diagnostic Services

State-of-the-art digital audiology suite with soundproof facilities and completely non-invasive, objective testing.

Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)

The fundamental hearing test used to detect hearing loss and assess its type and severity. The patient wears earphones and responds upon hearing pure-tone frequencies.

What it tells us:
  • • Degree of hearing loss (mild, moderate, severe, profound)
  • • Type of hearing loss (sensorineural or conductive)
  • • Which frequencies are affected

Speech Audiometry

Evaluates how softly words can be heard and how clearly they are understood. Understanding ability is measured as a percentage score.

Clinical Importance:
  • • Helps predict real-world communication ability
  • • Guides hearing aid selection
  • • Evaluates the benefit of amplification

Tympanometry (Impedance Audiometry)

Assesses eardrum mobility and middle ear pressure by introducing gentle air pressure. Generates tympanograms revealing stiffness or fluid.

Conditions detected include:
  • • Otitis media with effusion (glue ear) & eardrum perforation
  • • Eustachian tube dysfunction
  • • Ossicular chain discontinuity

OAE, BERA, and ASSR Advanced Testing

  • • Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE): Measures cochlear sound waves for newborn screening and ototoxicity monitoring.
  • • Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA): Measures brain electrical response to sound for infants, acoustic neuroma screening, and objective testing.
  • • Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR): Provides objective frequency-specific hearing thresholds.

Hearing Rehabilitation

Comprehensive hearing aid fitting, cochlear implant services, and auditory rehabilitation.

Digital Amplification

Hearing Aid Fitting

We offer comprehensive hearing aid services, including evaluation, selection, fitting, and follow-up care. Our approach is meticulous and evidence-based.

Our Process:
  • • Detailed audiological evaluation: To determine type and degree of loss
  • • Lifestyle & communication needs assessment: Daily listening environments
  • • Selection of the right device: Based on hearing pattern and lifestyle
  • • Real-ear verification (REM): Ensuring appropriate amplification
  • • Patient education & training: Learning use and care of devices
  • • Regular follow-up: Monitoring benefit and making adjustments

Hearing aids are highly effective for most mild to severe sensorineural hearing losses. Some conditions may require surgery or cochlear implants instead.

Surgical Implantation & Therapy

Cochlear Implant Services

For patients with severe to profound hearing loss who do not benefit sufficiently from conventional hearing aids:

  • • Pre-operative audiological and radiological evaluation
  • • Surgical implantation by Dr. Bhardwaj
  • • Post-operative programming and mapping
  • • Auditory verbal rehabilitation and long-term follow-up

Auditory Verbal Therapy & Speech Therapy

Essential for developing spoken language in children with implants or hearing aids. Includes speech and language evaluation, articulation therapy, language stimulation, voice therapy, and post-surgery rehabilitation.

Neonatal and Pediatric Hearing Care

Early identification of hearing loss is critical for speech and language development. We offer:

  • • Newborn Hearing Screening: OAE and BERA-based screening for early detection
  • • Hearing Assessment in Older Children: Age-appropriate testing for toddlers and school-age children
  • • Management of Pediatric Hearing Loss: Hearing aids, cochlear implants, and rehabilitation
  • • Speech and Language Assessment: For children with suspected hearing or speech difficulties

When Should You Get Your Hearing Tested?

Recognize the early signs of hearing loss and protect your hearing health.

Difficulty hearing in background noise
Ringing, buzzing, or fullness in ears
Frequently asking others to repeat
Turning up TV or radio volume
Dizziness or balance problems
Sudden hearing changes (Emergency)

* Adults above 40 should have routine hearing checks even without symptoms, as hearing loss can progress silently.
